Paint is an essential part of the themed environment. It provides support to the immersive reality for which the guests are transported to. I have worked with themed paint on multiple projects. Below are some samples.
Rusted Paint Sample Panel
Aged and rusted finishes are an important part of themed spaces. This sample panel was created to show different texturing, layering, and application techniques. Texture was first applied to the substrate. On top of that an acid blocking primer was applied. Then, color or iron paint was sponge applied. Once both the color and iron paint were set an oxidizer spray was used to speed up the oxidation process of the metal flake. Once oxidized to the desired effect a sealer clear coat was sprayed over the entire panel.
Themed Mine Cart Access Panel
This themed access panel was created using a polyiso and poplar wood base. Texture was applied to the substrate using a thin layer of mortar to simulate material buildup and bubbling. Acetone was used to create negative impressions to simulate rust erosion. After texturing the entire panel it was coated with an acid blocking primer and iron oxidizing paint. The faux rivets were modeled in fusion 360 and 3D printed out of PLA. Once the rivets were applied and painted the entire panel was sprayed with an oxidizing spray and left to oxidize for 48 hours. Once oxidized it was colored and detailed. It was left for an additional 24 hours for the oxidation to blend with the color. A final clear coat sealant layer was then applied
Painted Concrete
Concrete is a widely used throughout the built environment. I have worked on concrete paint projects where colored washes, texture, and seal-coats were applied. I have also worked with glow pigment and solid latex based paints.
